WINNIPEG, MB
Steel is a gorgeous boy who was living at a commercial breeding farm. Thankfully he was sprung and landed with our friends at a border collie rescue. They called and asked if we could help and, well you know what we said, "YES!" Steel was transported to Brandon, MB where he is being spoiled and is learning all about the good life.
Steel update after his collapse Tuesday night -- Sept 27, 2024
I picked up Steel yesterday from the vet. He is doing well!! He is relaxing after the crazy last few days but is acting like himself!
On Tuesday night Steel suddenly collapsed and was taking to emergency where he was placed in a high oxygen environment and became stable .
A number of tests were done, and he is being treated now for liver disease and that with his heartworm was obviously not a good combo. We are hoping and praying that he doesn't collapse again (if that does happen, we will look into daily ECG monitoring).
So thankful to report that an ECHO didn't show any abnormalities in his heart! And his bloodwork came back looking good. He is on medication for his liver and will get his liver levels checked again in a month. This boy really is a fighter!! Next steps will be working with his regular vet to figure out what the heartworm treatment looks like moving forward after what happened this week.
As Steel's foster, I am only one piece of the puzzle helping with this beautiful boy. I am so thankful to everyone helping in several different ways:
The SPIN community for all your love, prayers, and support. I was so encouraged to read how many people care about Steel! Your words helped immensely over the last few days.
Those who generously donated to Steel's medical costs, thank you so much! (If you are interested in donating check out SPIN's website)
The medical team at Winnipeg Animal Emergency/Pembina Veterinary Hospital for the great care he recieved (it was noted that he was a sweetie to have in the hospital).
SPIN's Laura Boksman and Paula Bund. Laura oversees the medical side of things for the dogs, and she has been a huge help in managing everything. Paula is the foster coordinator and called me at 1am Tuesday night as I'm crying to give me the support I needed.
Steel is so thankful for his community, it really does take a village!
UPDATE Oct. 2 : Steel has fully recovered from the collapse and now starting his heartworm treatment . Steel is home now! Injection went well. Going to ice the spot he got the injection and have his medication as well. Lots of rest and down time for the next few months. His next injections are booked for Oct 31 and Nov 1st.
