Yesterday was happy one for Chauncey. He joined his furever family: Martin, Lysanne, their sons Samuel and (absent from our photo) Jérémie in Ottawa. Chauncey finally lived up to his name, which means chance. Four months ago his person died and he was sent to be euthanized. Standard Poodles in Need got the call from a vet who had convinced the family to rehome the 6-year-old standard poodle. Chauncey has Addison's Disease, you see, which means he doesn't produce enough cortisol and requires medication. Yet the condition is very treatable with three little pills each morning and three more each evening. Mixed in with tuna, Chauncey thinks those pills are a treat! When SPIN called and asked if we could pick him up from the vet and foster, she had us at "euthanasia." Still, Chauncey was an overgrown, matted mess, smelly and quite shut down. Yet thanks to love, patience and two glow-ups, he showed off his inner poodle. Chauncey had by all evidence not been exposed to many dogs before becoming a foster. Thanks to his foster brothers, Juneau and Bowie, he learned that playing with other dogs is not a threat and that pack zoomies are fun. He was with us for four months and it took that long for him to start playing again - decompression can take several months. He suddenly loved crunching down on balls. Our house is suddenly still, since Chauncey has a big personality and our dogs are adapting (mourning?). They miss his salad crunching and apple slice munching. We wish Chauncey and his new family all the best. He is now with a family that raised their hands to take him after learning about his special needs.
