Back in June 2022 Ronnie made his way into SPIN. He was left behind when his person moved. Just left. See ya later buddy. So this nice woman took him into her home, gave him a groom and then called SPIN. Ronnie, while a total love bug to his people, was a lot of dog. Still is! But Ronnie has learned so much.
Ronnie, big magnificent Ronnie, has a big personality and a big bark. His initial greeting with new people was intended to scare them and make them back away. And he could jump! Man that dog could get air. Needless to say,THAT behaviour had to change. Really Ronnie. Not on.
After two brief stays in foster homes Ronnie landed at Black Dog Pet Resort where he stayed, free of charge, for a year and a half. SPIN hired a trainer and John the owner set to work slowly changing Ronnie’s mindset. Ronnie got to practice living with other dogs and after a long while he got to know the routine and became John’s helper. He was great with going out to get a scared or recalcitrant dog to get them to come back into the kennel. And the thing is, big scary Ronnie, did this with finesse and kindness. John said he didn’t teach him this. He simply knew his job.
What we had to teach Ronnie was that it wasn’t his job to scare people away. Not your job Ronnie! I went over to practice with Ronnie, but we quickly fell in love with each other. Gosh I love this dog. He’s my dog! We had some fun times playing. We needed to recruit knew people to let Ronnie know that a whole lot of people in this world were great and fun … and allowed into the play yard…
So many volunteers showed up. New people would be out in the yard and Ronnie would know that they were there to have fun and to play. Slowly, slowly his behaviour changed and the true, magnificent Ronnie emerged. They all loved him and he loved them.
Then some volunteers started to taking Ronnie off premises for adventure walks and sniffaries and Ronnie loved it. His beautiful personality shone through, so much so that he was adopted. Unfortunately, Ronnie's adoption didn't last and he was returned to SPIN. However, one foster loves Ronnie and so that foster has been fostering him ever since. Bill, our foster, and his dog MoeJoe are teaching Ronnie how to slow down, relax and take it easy. And you know what? That is exactly what Ronnie is doing. SPIN also hired a fantastic trainer to assist with Ronnie and help with training.
Today, Ronnie is still learning that he does not have to get excited and protective in certain situations and his adopter(s) will have to continue working with him in this area. In return, they will be rewarded with a very loyal dog who is well trained and has excellent recall.
Ronnie has been with us for two years. Two years with plenty of admirers but no one to call his very own. It's time for Ronnie to find his forever home.
